How does paid search work on Google Ads?

Paid search — usually called SEA for "search engine advertising" — covers both the ads that slot in at the top of Google's results and the display banners running on websites and apps.

A Google Ads campaign lets you set the keyword choice, the geography, the schedule, the devices people are searching from, and the type of call to action.

Display ads put your message in front of a specific audience as they browse the various sites and apps they already visit.

How do you actually optimize a Google Ads campaign?

Google Ads covers the ads at the top of Google's search results, the banners on most websites, and inventory on YouTube. A SEA campaign is built to deliver the best possible return on investment — that is, hit the most goals you can within the budget you've set.

For each ad, you can choose:

  • where it shows: by geography, day and time of day, the devices used, etc.;

Picking the keywords your ad shows on

A better ad gets you to your end goals (clicks, leads, calls, sales, etc.) at the best price.

Depending on the strategy, you can be more or less specific in the keywords you choose to show on. That choice also drives bid amounts. Several match types let you tune performance.

  • Exact match: ads only run when those exact keywords are typed, or close variants (with or without accents, singular or plural);
  • Phrase match: ads run on queries that contain the chosen keywords, or close synonyms;
  • Broad match: ads run on a wide range of queries (synonyms and broader expressions) related to the chosen keyword.
  • Negative keywords: you can make sure your ads don't show when certain words appear in the query.

To decide which ad lands at the top, Google's algorithm looks at:

  • the bid amount;
  • the ad's quality score, calculated automatically from: how relevant the ad is to the targeted keywords; the click-through rate from the Google results page; how engaged people are once they land on the page.
